INVESTING IN IMMIGRANT:
THE LOW RISK OF COLLABORATING WITH A
FIRST-TIME DIRECTOR
We know investors weigh several factors when deciding to share in the cost of making a film.
While there are risks inherent in any film investment, recent findings from a Stephen Follows/Bruce Nash study show that working with a first-time director isn’t one of them! (https://stephenfollows.com/is-hiring-a-first-time-director-a-risk/)
In fact, there are just as many benefits to investing in a film with a first-time director as with an experienced one. The study came away with three key findings:
- First-time directors are often marking their debut at the helm in ‘micro-budget productions.’ This lowers the amount of initial investment needed to complete the project and makes it easier to recoup an investment. (Graph 1)
- Directorial experience has little bearing on a film’s profitability. In some budget ranges, directorial debuts were even more profitable. (Graph 2)
- While films with repeat directors were slightly more likely to be profitable than experience a loss, the difference between repeat directors and first-time directors in this area was marginal. To quote from the study, “First time directors are just as likely to make breakout hits as repeat directors.” (Graph 3)
We hope every investor who joins us on this journey is as excited about it as we are, secure in the knowledge that our team is dedicated to making IMMIGRANT a success!
